DESPERADO CANYON 3AIII. STATE LINE HILLS, NEVADA

The State line hills is the range just to the northwest of Primm, Nevada.   The limestone mountains have 4 canyons that run through them on the east face of the ridge.

The drive to the trail head was slightly confusing since we did not have the actual track to the canyons head, so we ended up parking Justin's 4 runner an extra mile and a half from the trail head.

The conditions were perfect for a hike up the mountain.  The January sun with a cool breeze made this hike very easy and straightforward.

We hiked up 950 of elevation gain and made pretty good time as we approached the canyon.

the limestone was a bit brittle but overall, the hike was straightforward.

We had a couple of false summits to get over but once we were at the top, it was all down hill from there.

Once we spotted the canyon, we made our descent down and worked our way to the first rap.

The first two raps are right next to each other, the first rap is around 30-40ft and the second rap is around 60-70ft

This was Justin's first canyon so it was great to take him out to check out some caving in the sun light.

We worked our way down the beginning of the canyon and it was more of a gorge just like ladder of doom.

After a few more raps we got into the main portion of the canyon and the walls started to rise as we descended deeper into the canyon.

There were a bunch of small drops and a lot of down climbs to negotiate but they were not too difficult to get around.

The limestone walls started to meander and the drops had some interesting fluting within the walls.

Thankfully, there was no water to negotiate around given we just had a lot of rain recently.

We continued down the raps and encountered some very interesting fossil collections within the walls.

Since limestone is basically the remains of what was at the bottom of an ocean, there could always be something interesting cemented into the rock but I was impressed with this array that we came across.

There appeared to be naulitoids, Gastropods, Rugose Solitary, Crinoids, and some other anomilies within the rock.

I was surprised to see the cluster of different species together like this as they are usually just one or two within the rock.

These speciems appear to be around 350 to 400 million years old, given the kind of cepthopod that they are.

We continued down the canyon and we noticed more fossils within the walls of the similar look that we have found in the canyon earlier.

We encountered around 10 raps within the canyon and a bunch of down climbs before exiting out of the canyon just in time for the sunset.

We made it back to the car in about 8 hours from starting our approach which is pretty good time especially from where we were coming from.

This canyon was very scenic and I highly recommend this canyon over ladder of doom.
