Inside Cueva Del Falso Tributario

Rolf came over to Tom's house early so we could get a early start to a long day we had planned ahead. We drove up to Lourdes to get some breakfast and chat a bit about how Rolfs Cueva larga project is going, as well as some of his future endeavors that he is looking to accomplish regarding karst morphology. We continued on to the Lares area and the landowners property where Dos Ojos, Larga, and Dugon are located. We had to park next to the landowners house and the only spot to park was next to a pile of broken glass and garbage which was a bit sketchy since this was a rental. The road leading to the property wasn't the best either and in the past, Tom had his car siphoned while parking down the street from where we parked the cars now...Nice!! We were re-assured that nothing will happen to the cars and that everything will be fine.

We head out on the trail over the mogote saddles and down the steep and slippery mogote slopes to a dry wash where the junction to Larga and Dugon can be decided upon. It is not that easy to hike up and down the saddles of the mogote mountains even though they are more like large steep hills, the dense vegetation and the amount of mogotes in the area are so plentiful that it can easy get lost and find it hard to cut through the jungle to get to where you want to go. We hike up to another saddle and I see some trail tape. we hike down and around an area where I was last year that contained small fragments of a cave system which might have been a connection to Dugon and Larga in the past. I pursued all of the leads but it did not go anywhere. We continued up another saddle and came to a narrow canyon with sheer cliffs 50-60ft to the bottom. We hike up and around this canyon and it continued to be sheer all around the collapse. This is Dugons collapsed entrance. We would have needed to bring rope and rig to a tree in order to get into this entrance of Dugon.

On the other side we could see the large entrance of the cave. It was quite impressive but with some cords at hand, I continued to look for the horizontal entrance to the cave. We hiked down to another collapse where the waypoint took me and this was not successful. These cords are off again. We looked around a bit more and I could not find the way in. We searched on the other side of the saddle without success. Here we are, standing on top of the entrance with a large canyon with sheer cliffs that extend to another entrance and we can not even get inside this cave....lol...I thought it was amusing and a bit of a slap in the face at the same time.

Time was running out so Rolf went to Larga while we went to meet up with Tom at Loudres to Visit Cueva Del Falso Tributario.
Eventually we met up with Tom and we drove to the parking spot where we geared up and headed down to Cueva Del Falso Tributario. Tom was explaining to me that people may not have been to this cave for over 20 years and since his recent last visit, ropes are required to descend inside the cave. The report was that there is a climbable drop and than there is another drop that leads into a walking passage where water can be heard, Lots of water. This is significant as the camuy disappears under the valley area where we were near and resurges farther down towards the ocean. There are other systens that feed and recharge from the camuy but nobody has ever been able to connect the camuy or find where it goes from when it insurges to where it resurges so Cueva Del Falso Tributario is a good lead which may help answer this question. We are now right in the middle of the questionable area, in a valley, possibally above the underground camuy system.

We hike through the valley and pass leaves that are large. After a while, we make it to the entrance of the cave and it was a dry wash leading into the system. We gear up our vertical gear and made our traverse towards the first drop while crawling around large logs and under formations. The first drop were short and one was indeed climbable, but we rigged a rope high into a natural hole with a lot of stone to ensure the anchor did not break. there were no other good anchors and of course there were no bolts or pitons in the area. We pad the sharp and nasty lip with Tom's bag and descend down to the bottom where the next drop was located. I moved some rocks and started my descent down to a platform where the next drop was located. Our first rope ended before the lip of this drop but I flaked out the second rope and fed that down the drop and found that there was not enough rope! Even if I tied the two ropes together, there still wouldn't have been enough rope to make it to the bottom and I would have short roped myself.

I could hear water dripping from different locations, water landing in pools of water and large echos that traveled for up to 5 seconds including my voice when I yelled into the unknown. I was amazed to hear how much room was down there and I really wanted to get to the bottom but we just did not have enough rope to make it happen. Thinking back at it, I should have just rapped down and did a change over to see what was down there but I came back up and attempted to look for more rig points at the bottom of the first pit. Tom pointed out one was margionally good if there were some other anchors involved but the other two were quite sketchy, in my opinion, so we opted to save this one for another time where it could be surveyed and documented once at the bottom.

DAY 2-CUEVA EVAPORADA AND HUMO

We drive past the Camuy commercial cave entrance and go down another twisting road to the small road with a 50-55 degree slope straight up to the landowners property where we parked and got ready for the caves. I talked to the landowners and they were nice enough to allow us to park and visit the two caves near their property. Cueva Evaporada and Humo are some of my all time favorite caves!!

Cueva Evaporada has a very impressive entrance which takes almost 20 minutes to get down and leave the light zone. It has a large trunk passage that has a room with a karst window, a micro forest in a upper level open air sink hole, and some more flowstone passage that leads to a breakdown pile and the end of the cave.

This is a fragment of a cave system that use to feed into the camuy cave system and use to be connected to Cueva del humo. Humo has a similar entrance and also has large trunk passage that extended into a large canyon passage and continues down into a lake, has side passages, and a tyrolean traverse section that connects to Angeles cave which connects to the camuy system. This cave is one of the larger systems in all of Puerto Rico but we were running out of time and had to get into this system before the sun went down so we could make it back to Tom’s house. We hike through thick vine overgrowth and into the mogote’s. After entering the mogotes, we traverse around and up to a saddle that took us down into the sink where the two caves exist. First, we went to Evaporada and started out hike down the 200ft entrance and around to where one of my favorite views is located looking out of the cave from within.

We continued around some massive boulders and entered a massive trunk passage that extended to the karst window room where we took a couple of pictures. I love this cave. The massive rooms and the echos from the bats and crickets make this cave and Puerto Rico caves so interesting to me. The development of life in such a remote place ponders my mind as to how adaptive life can be in such extreme conditions .

We head out of Evaporada and head over to Humo to hike down this 200 ft entrance with a bit more challenge due to the boulders and the slippery conditions. We get to the bottom level and I shine our lights up into the ceiling to watch hundreds of bat fly down the passage and into other rooms where they hide. There might even have been thousands of bats!! Their wings made a distinct sound as they flew in colonies at the top of the ceiling passage. We climb up to the top of the formation section and continued to hike down up and around massive ancient flowstone formations and other karst features. We went through a small connection room and popped out into the top of the canyon passage where the cave continued on and down into a small lake. Divers have pushed this sump before but I can not confirm what they have reported from their dive operation. We ended up turning around so we could have enough time to make it to Tom’s house and I should have take a few pics of this particular trip but I already took pics of Humo on the last trip. If I ever come back to do the through trip to Angeles cave or a dive, I will be sure to take some more pics of this wonderful place.

DAY-2 CUEVA PENCHO

Cueva Pencho Puerto Rico

set out on our own to visit some caves in the Camuy area as everyone else had to work. I was told about a sink hole that had a small cave passage with some excellent waterwork system called Cueva Pencho. According to Jeff Kruse, This cave was throught to be Ponor 4 and apart of the camuy system but it turns out to be a separate system. We got some cords and set out to the landowners house early in the morning to avoid the afternoon rainfall. The landowners were nice enough to allow us to park in the front of their house so we didn't have to worry about the car being broken into along with having the opportunity for a rather easish walk back to the car from the cave.
I had a couple of cords to this system so we set out and ended up hiking up a steep saddle in between two mogotes that took us down into thick thorny vine brush which was not easy to whack through with a dull edged machete. We eventually found a trail that was leading east and west so I scouted up and down it without any luck in finding this sink. It turns out that some of the cords that we got were not accurate so we retraced our path and went to a lead that I saw which turned out to be Pencho.

The sink hole had around a 70 to over a 100ft drop down to the bottom of the sink. We rigged a tensionless to some wild looking tree and rapped over the edge and down to the bottom of the sink. It was dry, there was no water running through the cave like we were told to be aware of but the sun was shined through the forest and the array of vines that dangled and traversed across the sink gave this sink, a very interesting charteristic to it.

This cave appears to be a whirlpool of sorts as run-off water recharges this sink and appears to swirl around bottom. I am sure this is quite the site to see in a flood! There is a bottom level that has static water with garbage floating and a water passage leading to the sump.

Down in the lower level of the sink there was a static pool of water that I was told has already been pushed by cave divers without a successful connection to any other significant passage. We continued to walk upstream through the passage and recognized the interesting wall and formation growth on the walls of this cave

After about 10 minutes we found the exit to the cave and we were able to walk out if we wanted to but we came back down and decided to climb back up the rope to exit the cave

This was a nice little system with the amount of growth from the tree roots and vines that are attempting to dominate the space within this sink but we wanted to check out some more caves in the area and decided on visiting Cueva Humo and Evaporada!

I am glad we got a chance to come here as it was a beautiful place and interesting to visit while we were down here but In my opinion, it was no comparison to the next two caves we are going to visit, Evaporada and Humo.

DAY 1-CUEVA GOLONDRINA AND CUEVA CATHEDRAL

Cueva Golondrina Camuy Puerto Rico

I have been wanting to get out to Hawaii, China, Borneo, and South America for quite some time now but Puerto Rico keeps dragging me back every year and now here I am, back again, on my 5^th year visiting Puerto Rico. I absolutely love the rain Forests that Puerto Rico has to offer along with the islands that surround the main island, the ocean, the Dry Forest, and of course, the caves. There are 1000's of cave and fragments of older systems in the mogote mountain Karst belt of Puerto Rico with more just waiting to be discovered for the intrepid visitor to the island. Some of these caves have been developing and collapsing for millions of years in a active solutional dance that the karst topography has been doing with the meandering watercourses. The Camuy system has one of the largest underground rivers in the world with leads that are still being discovered.  The Rio Encantado system stretches for almost 17km under the rain forest with active caves and sumps that have been hydrologically connected through previous expeditions.

Millions of years ago, the Rio Camuy use to take a different course down to the ocean along with other river systems like the Tanama river as they would eat away the limestone into valleys and caves until it encountered basalt layers that would stop this erosion from continuing.  This action would work in conjunction with the usual carbonic dissolution process creating some massive trunk passages inside these caves with ceilings over 150ft and stretch almost this equal distance in width. The geology of Puerto Rico is interesting as it rose out of the South American seas near Patagonia 100's of millions of years ago and shifted through tectonic action to where Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean today.

Puerto Rico has some of the most impressive canyon and cave systems in the Caribbean, so it's no question as to why this beautiful island keeps bringing me back to visit.   The caves house a plethora of life including crickets, boa’s, different species of bats, scorpions, crabs, and the famous whip scorpion called the Guapa. On this trip we got the opportunity to visit 13 caves which ranged from missing pieces of the camuy system to fragments of systems that have otherwise collapsed upon themselves creating their own individual identity from one another.

I arrive at Pipo’s waiting to hear about how the weather was going to be like for Juan Neives the following day. Cueva Juan Neives is a very wet cave with raging waterfalls and fast flood potential so after the locals looked up the weather conditions, they did not want us to venture into the cave the following day. Instead we slept at Pipos and drove over to Loudres which is a bakery and a place where local cavers meet up to visit two other caves in the area, Cueva Golondrina and Cueva Cathedral.

We got to the bakery a bit early to find out that everyone was going to show up an hour late so we took a nap in the car and woke up when they arrived. We met up With Julie Dutil, Tom Miller, and Carlos Artiguez. Carlos was running later than the others, so we ended up going to the first cave to rig and get set up without burning off too much day light. Golondrina was literally down the street and right off the road. We could see the entrance from the road and I remember driving past this place on previous trips clueless as to what was right off the road, Amazing what is literally right off the road. Julie had a 300ft rope so we rigged a tensionless anchor to a viney palm tree and set up a re direct on a stalagmite to reduce rope abrasion.

This cave ended up using just about all of Julie’s rope but the pit itself is more of a staged steep walk down with a couple small shear ledges, rather than a straight vertical drop. I set up the de direct and descended down while laying out the rope as I dropped into the pit. After passing the mid drop I notice some bags on some kind of cord that looked like they had dead chickens inside of them!! Carlos was previously describing that there were chickens found with their heads cut off and candles at the entrance drop of this pit before, so It was a bit creepy to find this and I pondered voodoo as I bumped into these decaying remains of sacrificial gore, was I was going to be possessed?

Anyway, I made it down to the bottom and called off rope while I noticed the sun’s rays blasting through into this cave as the sun was lighting up the whole entrance and reflecting an orange hue . It was beautiful!!!!!

This cave was also known to have trash at the bottom, so we wanted to survey and document this cave and recommend a cleanup effort be executed to keep this beautiful cave in good shape. There was broken glass and tires at the bottom but overall it was not as bad as I thought I would be after hearing the stories before entering this cave.

We all helped with the survey effort and eventually ascended out of the cave to go across the street to visit Cueva Cathedral. These two caves must have connected at one time as they are really close to each other and trend in a similar direction.
We ran across the street in our muddy caving gear and ran into the forest to start out trek down the saddle of a mogote that leads to a valley and the top of the beautifully decorated pit entrance to Cueva Cathedral.

This cave use to be a commercial cave and people would pay a group to take them into this cave system but for some reason it was shut down and is now vacant. Down the valley is where Cueva Del Falso Tributario is located and is another cave that we will be visiting in a couple of days, but for now we got to go down into the horizontal entrance of Cueva Cathedral.

The entrance was a pretty impressive one for Puerto Rico Standards as the crickets were chirping and the colors of greens and blues reflected their mossy color that the ancient formations had on the once active solutional limestone.

We continued down the passage and climbed over some boulders to get to another length of passage where we had to walk up a steep breakdown pile of lose rock and mud to the main room in the cave.

This was a beautiful open air room that had hanging gardens of moss and plants drapped over the old formations. Birds mingling with the bats as they flew in and out into the rain forest from the karst window at the top of the cave. I wish we rappelled into this room to get the full effect but just being here looking up into the rain forest from the bottom was impressive in itself!!! On the walls of the cave there were pictographs from the Taino Indians but all I could imagine were the angry birds from the mobile app game.

Julie came out of a decorated room and insisted that I go through knee high mud to view this place, so Carlos and I went back there and we found some very interesting formations. A lot of them looked like they were cut off from the top and the ceiling was filled with soda straws and the floor was decorated with over 100 stalagmites.

Afterwards we started to head out as it was getting darker outside and we wanted to make sure we had some time to beat the crowds from the San Sebastian festival going on down the street from where we were currently at.

I got some pics as we came out of the cave passage which was not that long, actually as a matter of fact, a lot of the caves in Puerto Rico seem to be fragments of longer ancient systems so the length of these caves is not as long as the majority of the caves in the states with regard to length but the rooms are quite large and picturesque! Once we got back to the car, Tom invited us to stay at his place for a few days which was nice of him so we ended up going to his place to set up the tent under his carport which had a nice overlook in the mountains of San Sebastian Puerto Rico.

FANTASTIC PIT..YES!!

Predrag and Phil watching Ken climbing fantastic Pit in Ellisons Cave Georgia

6am strikes the clock on a cold but sunny Saturday morning in Dalton Georgia as we start to prepare for a cave system that test the limits of everyone in the group. Pigeon Mountain is a small mountain in Georgia that is home to one of the worlds best cave system known as Ellison's Cave. What makes this system unusually interesting is that it is home to a number of deep in-cave pits including warm-up 100-12-150ft pits, Smokey 1 and Smokey 2 pits ranging up to 500 ft. the more popular 440ft. incredible pit, and the famous 586ft. Fantastic Pit. Last year I drove down from Chicago with a group out motivated cavers to meet up with another group of cavers to do a crossover trip, meaning we started at opposite sides of the cave and crossed paths in the cave and climbed up each others rigged ropes that we rappelled from. Ellison's Cave System has multiple levels of passages, amazing crystal and mineral rooms including the angel hair room with gypsum needles and the north and south pole rooms which contain a translucent Ice Calcite formation which is one of the biggest specimens of Ice Calcite I have ever seen.

This time around I am leading a trip to Fantastic Pit and rigging the drop with the rest of my crew in what became a 12hr. journey into my groups physical and mental limitations as well as how they broke through their "glass-ceiling" challenges while practicing safe and conservative cave practices.

We drove to the blue hole at the end of blue hole road and started to get set up for the hike up the mountain. I remember having the hike take about an hour so I wanted to give it about that much time so we could get up there quickly. We began our hike up and noticed that there was a beaten path leading us in the direction that I had my way point on which was a big help. After about 30 minutes we made it within 150ft of the entrance and I quickly was able to find the Dug entrance to Ellison's cave and what is known as the ecstasy passage as it is all walking to the warm up pit. Before this entrance was open, people use to have to take another hour from another entrance and crawl their way through into the ecstasy passage. We got ready and made our way over the warm up pit, rigged into the bolts with steel biners and started to descend down the 120ft warm up pit.

After everyone got down, I made my way up the breakdown piles with the mainline and a backpack to the 30ft climb. I made my way around the area to see where the balcony was and I noticed multiple levels of canyon passages and a path in the direction as to where the balcony was located. I came back and ascended up the rope with the backpack and the 670ft of rope with a 2 to1 haul system using the pre rigged rope tied onto my body to make the weighted climb a bit easier. Once I got to the top everyone else started to come up and I ventured over the breakdown traverses to the top of the clearly visible but inconspicuous Fantastic Pit. It really doesn't look like much from the top but once you get past the balcony level, it opens up, substantially!

To get around to the rig point for fantastic, we had to traverse around a very exposed clay/mud bank by clipping into rope and crawling around a ledge to a place where we can all get set up. We rig the gear to the rope and traverse it around the ledge so people did not have to carry so much stuff with them and weight themselves towards the drop. one slip and the steep slope would cast you into the depths of Ellisons Fantastic Pit. Phil and I Rig into the ceiling and back it up to other local bolts, we feed the rope down and clip in to start our descents. Predrag is the first to go down while I gather what kind of camera gear I am going to use on this trip. The night before, we had some adjustments to the gear selection and placement which changed a few things around for me. But I rigged a powerful flashlight into the bolts at the top to light the fog cloud and the shadows from the top down. I clip into the safety and clip into the main line as I lift the 50lb rope and thread it through my rack. I didn't feel as anxious as I did the first time I did this but I did take a few deep breaths as I stepped over the edge and swung out into the 586 freefell.

I pop two bars off and start my descent down slowly as I passed the balcony. Once I got past 100ft I noticed the vertical passage bell out and a enormous fissure crack with consecutive dome rooms in the distance that I never noticed before. I also noticed a house sized boulder leaning into the wall which was quite a sobering sight to see. I could see tiny light that looked like distant stars as a continued to descend through the fog cloud and as my ears started to pop from the elevation loss. Eventually the lights became more identifiable as well as the silhouette of Predrag as I made my final descent and contact with the rocky bottom. phew!! what a crazy place this is.

Ken came down the rope a changed man before I got on rope as he tempted himself to not do what he was about to do a few times and I am sure everyone else had the same feeling before they got on rope. Dorian stayed at the top as he felt that it was too much of a climb for him at this point so Phil got on rope and started to descend down.

Phil attached a bunch of Christmas lights to him as he descended which looked like the grench took Christmas lights to the bottom of the cave and stashed them away. Hilarious! I was wondering what that red tail was that was hanging off of him.

So here we are, all at the bottom of fantastic pit. I wanted to hang out for a bit and take some more pictures so Ken was the first one to ascend up the rope which took him 30 something minutes. I got a pic of him from directly below him which looks like he is 50ft. from me but is actually over 300ft. off the ground.

After Ken got off rope at the top, Phil climbed tandem to save a little bit of time and have the experience of climbing fantastic on tandem. I am not the biggest fan of tandem climbing so they started to climb out. She said she kept on thinking about the gear that she was using and if it will keep her in place.

After an hour, they made it to the top and I got on rope. I started to climb and climb and climb and climb...at times it felt like I was not making much progress but I started to notice the house sized boulder and the large fissure crack so I took a lot of breaks and took it all in. I REALLY enjoyed the climb and although it only took 20 minutes to get up, I got a chance to take it all in and appreciate the place that we were all experiencing. Predrag climbed out last and we de rigged the rope and started to shuttle gear back through the drops and up the warm up pit. We finally made it out of the cave and got to the car in around 12hrs time which is right around how long I thought it would take. Everyone got a chance to experience how amazing this cave system was and I was glad we all got to go on this trip.

FALL TAG 2014 DAY 2 AT FLOWING STONE CAVE

The day before, we drove through the night and went to visit Valhalla on a few hours of car sleep. When I got to the hotel I closed my eyes and in what appeared to be a blink, the time went from 930pm to 6am. We all got ready for the day and got breakfast where we discussed what we were going to do for the day. Our plan was to go to Flowing Stone Cave which was on Pigeon Mountain about an hour from us. Afterwards, we were planning on going to Ulla Cave, Richards Cave, and Dragfold Pit, which are all located near each other. We set out for Pigeon Mountain after breakfast and a few calibrations within our group dynamic. We finally make it over to the Kiosk and park our cars at the end of the road that leads to the quarry.

We gear up and hike for about 30-45 minutes up and around the quarry to make our final B-line to the entrance of Flowing Stone cave. I have heard that this one was a bit hard to find but I was able to get two separate cords for this one so that worked out quite well and we were able to find it rather quickly.We rigged at 380ft rope on a tree and padded the entrance pretty good since there was a lot of fluted water cut rock formations before the main drop was encountered. I get on rope and make my way around the pads and over to the main drop of the cave.

The rap is near the wall as I descended down but that did not block the incredible views of the large active flowstone showering down water with the slow moving water rings the casually descended the flowstone and a syncopated order. The other semi active flowstones decorated the walls and surrounding area as a continued to descend to the bottom.

Once I got to the bottom of the cave I looked around and I could see the rain shower from the flowstone above dropping water into a series of rimstone dams and carving out cave pearls where a few salamanders sauntered about. There was a pool of water in the foreground which collected some of the water from the falls but the majority of the water streamed down a series of active flowstone rimstone dams below us which leads to the bottom of the cave. This was absolutely beautiful!!

Flowing Stone Cave Georgis

The rimstone flowstone dams created a stair step of sorts that covered the passage and even encapsulated some other boulders that were in the way of this water action. It is a “must see” kind of place and I am glad we all got to go there.

We continued to ascend back out of the cave after a few pictures and by the time we all got out, the sun was starting to set and realized that this cave venture took all day. Our choice was to continue to some other caves including Ulla, Richards, and Dragfold, or go back to the hotel for dinner and rest to prepare for the following day at Fantastic Pit

By the time we all made it down to the car, it was nightfall so we headed back to the hotel to sort out our gear and group dynamic so we could prepare for the grand finale, Fantastic Pit in Ellison’s Cave.
