CORAL PINK SAND DUNES

CORAL PINK SAND DUNES

After Boltergeist we decided to leave Zion and go out to a state park so we could get a shower and have a nice quiet campsite so we went to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.  I have always wanted to check this place out ever since I looked at a Utah map and wondered what was at coral pink sand dunes. We drove to the state park and took our much needed shower which was one of the most refreshing showers I have ever taken.  Afterwards we hiked out to some sand dunes.

It started to rain out which was prob more rain than I have ever seen the desert get at a particular time.  we were soaked but the sun came out and dried us out pretty quickly.  The state park allows dune buggys and ATVs to drive around on the sand dunes so in the distance we could see these dune buggies jumping over dunes while spitting up sand as they pushed forward. I got the bright idea to try to slide down the sand dune with a rain jacket but physics was working against me and so was the rain so I slid to a stand still so quick my feet almost flew over my back!  not cool...lol !!

Anyway, this place was beautiful and as the sun went down along with the 6 pack of craft local beer we picked up, the colors changed into a bright blazing orange tint around everything in the park.

the rain drops gave the sand a bit more color and texture to the surroundings as well as the flora that patched itself around the sand dunes.

It is my understanding that this sand has come from a fault that is resting under this strip of sand which moves about 15ft a year.  The grinding of sandstone rock from the fault has created this sand as well as the winds that com from the mountians above depositing the sand as the winds spread out as the valley widens.

We ended up staying up until the stars came out to enjoy the glow that the moon had on the desert sands below which also was a sit in itself to see.

The next day we left and headed out for Elkhart canyon cliffs which was right back on the road to check out some slot canyons and than head to our final destination at Cathedral Gorge in Nevada.

I highly recommend Coral pink sand dunes for a great place to camp and a nice afternoon stroll onto some pinkish orange sand in the high altitude terrain of Utah.
