IMMACULATE CANYON, ARIZONA
July 08, 2019
There are a bunch of canyons that feed into Oak Creek and the region around the forks of West Clear Creek and Oak Creek.
The temps were mild when we started on this particular "I", The "I's Immaculate, Insomnia, Illusion Canyons, are three fantastic canyons within the north Arizona region.
I have only had a chance to visit Immaculate canyon and it was a easy day effort wise with some interesting rappels and a short but nice narrow section at the last third of the canyon.
We had a fairly "late" start and hit the canyon trail at around 8 am in the morning. We followed an easy hike down to the tail of the canyon and found our first rap.
The first section of the canyon was green with moss and a fairly open in nature.
On one of the raps we set up a redirect to keep people in a better situation than an exposed traverse some felt not so happy about.
We worked our way down the canyon and made it to the bigger drops that took us to the second and final sections within the canyon.
Everything was going well until we stuck a rope on one of the lower drops.
Apparently the rope was stuck above and below the rapper so he had to downclimb a bit and un-stick the rope.
Finally we were able to release the rope from being stuck and we were able to get down into the cavernous lower section of the canyon .
This was the best part of the canyon and although it was short, we made it down and out in good time.
Next was the hike out of the canyon and we were able to get out of there in good time, very good time actually. The hike out was steep in some sections but in other sections it was pretty straight forward and once we got to the top it was relatively flat and nice.
Although this canyon had its moments and some nice big rappels, i would recommend this canyon as a Sunday route.
The other two I's are canyons that I am looking forward to visiting in the near future but we will see when that happens.
These are at around 7ft of elevation so there is a chance of encountering snow in a lot of these canyons until the beginning of may.
Arizona has some really nice canyons and I am looking forward to visiting more in the near future.
