MAQUOKETA STATE PARK |
After climbing at the
Mississippi Palisades I headed on over to Maquoketa caves park in Iowa. It was around a 30 mile drive each way but it
was well worth the visit!!

When you enter the property there is this canyon
sink of sorts where water has eaten away and formed a natural arch and a small
river cave was formed by the eroding limestone and water action which made this
cave a walking thru trip….

with a paved concrete walkway but it was a small thru
trip!!

I walked up canyon to visit some of the other caves and they were small
passages that quickly ended with no formations in them.

The main attraction was near the entrance and
it was quite interesting to see.

Just
downstream there was a walk way that took you to the valley below that had a
few other small caves but nothing to really pursue.

I spent the latter half of the day hiking
around and enjoying this interesting place.

I highly recommend visiting this park if you are new to caving and want
to see some interesting features within a few hours from Chicago.
