WHISPERING FALLS CANYON. GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, ARIZONA
September 26, 2019
A beautiful oasis within the largest tributary in the grand canyon gives
life bearing water to our mortal souls and provides a scenic sanctuary
full of geologic eloquence.
Whispering falls is a 250 ft waterfall in the heart of kanab creek and is also a technical canyoneering route when visitors come from the east ( which can take a day for the approach)
An alternative sneak route is also available for river runners
and dedicated canyoneers coming into kanab creek from the west tributaries.
Day two for our team we headed out early and carried light packs to head up a loose sloping that gained us access to a break on the upper tiers of the red wall.
Once we got to the bench, we followed a lose and sketchy trail that took us around the mouth of whispering falls canyons and into the canyon itself.
The hike along the bench was beautiful and it was incredible to see how we can look down into whispering falls and the gothic walls around us.
After an hour or so of hiking along the bench, we came to a point where we could climb down into whispering falls canyon and start our descent into the canyon.
We only encountered three rappels but they all were gorgeous and had their own personalities
We were able to work our way around one of the rappels and this is where we counted three raps total.
The muav layer is my favorite layer in the grand canyon and it has some spectacular looking rock formation with its striated comb like appearance.
The second to the last rap had a beautiful hanging garden in the Muav which was rather
beautiful to see and experience.
The last rap made for this half day canyon, Whispering falls!
I was rather impressed to see just the top of the 250 ft rappel as the spring water slowly on a steep sloping face.
The top of the waterfall drop had some beautiful views below and formations hanging from the limestone walls where the water trickled down.
We replaced the webbing and headed down to the beautiful grotto that awaited us below.
As I got on rap, I could hear the small trickle of the water whispering down the sloped slab face.
Once I got lower I could see the clear waters of the pool of water that collects this water
I wanted to stay dry so I got onto a ledge and worked my way off rope than took a moment to observe this amazing place.
The hanging gardens formations and moss stretched over 100ft back up the wall, the water smelled of organic but a fresh life bearing scent to its presence and the light created a firey hue that made this place alive.
I was able to get into the cavernous grotto across the water to capture some beautiful lighting that was coming in.
The team came down and we headed down and out of Whispering falls canyon.
The muav was very scenic and beautiful as we continued to traverse out of the canyon and back into Kanab Creek.
We headed back to the camp to eat and strike camp as we had a long hike out to Scottys hollow and we wanted to make good time before we exited the canyon on the third day
