SHAKE TREE CANYON 3CII. ARIZONA
April 11, 2022
Shake tree is a C class classic canyon located near Payson AZ.
The drive to the trailhead is a nice dirt road for 2WD high clearance
You can't camp at the trailhead but
there is camping along the way towards the trailhead.
The Approach is also pretty straightforward as you follow a trail leading to the canyon.
There is a small amount of bushwhacking to get into the canyon which
takes around 10-15 minutes
Heading into the canyon you will find 9 rappels in beautiful waterfall scenes
The largest rap we encountered was around 150 ft so we brought 200 ft ropes for the large drop.
The remaining appeared to be less than 100 ft.
The largest rap is the most dramatic looking and is a blast!
We found that all the raps were easy to pull and the anchors were in good shape when we visited this canyon.
The raps are in rapid fire succession which also brings the charm level high for this canyon
I suspect that
this canyon flows quite well in snow run off and after storms.
Make sure you check the weather reports before entering into this canyon as flash floods can be very deadly.
Refer to ropewiki if you are looking for the most updated information as this is just for documenting purposes only and not to be used as official beta.
The exit was also straight forward and we were back at the car in 8 hours.
I highly recommend this canyon if you are in the region and look forward to coming back soon.
