RED SPUR CANYON, ROBBERS ROOST, UTAH.

May 02, 2022

Beyond the slab rock road of high spur is a great canyon to start adventure with.

The sandstone sculptures are nice, the approach and exit are straightforward, and the canyon is an overall great time.

Red Spur canyon is perfect canyon to start off with as it gives you an introduction into this high spur area.

It also prepares you for what is yet to be in the following days.

You will need to use a sandtrap for the first rap.

We had no issues gathering sand for the sandtrap and the placement for the trap was straightforward.

There are hook placements that someone can use as well and there is one really nice placement for a hook.

The canyon starts with some fun stemming and downclimbing and opens back up before closing up again.

We only encountered two raps and an additional sketchy downclimb that we decided to deploy the sandtrap for as well.

There is an optional side canyon where people can stem across that some of us opted to do, and others stayed in place.

The optional side canyon is the most difficult of the canyon and is optional

The last section of narrows is the most scenic and sculpted with narrow corridors and beautiful passage.

We didn't find anything too challenging in this canyon but rather a great day with some fun obstacles to overcome.

I think that if you come out to this region you want to check out red spur first.

This will give you a fun introduction into the spur area of robber's roost and prepare you for the more scenic canyons up the road.

We went from motel 6 to red spur and back in around 12 hrs.

I do recommend this canyon to be one to visit but expect a 3/4 day to complete.

I also recommend staying out in the spur as the roads are quite bumpy

you also need a permit to camp within glen canyon but if you continue up the road towards tidwell, eventually you will get out of the permitted lands.

I recommend at least a weekend out on the spur and camping on the rim for the incredible views.

You will enjoy this breathtaking place if solitude and beautiful desert landscape is within your wheelhouse.
