EREBUS CAYON, DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
November 29, 2022
Erebus Canyon is another Death Valley canyon locked in the Black mountains of Death Valley National Park.
There are some interesting rock formations within the
Black mountains from 1.8-billion-year-old rock, according to the NPS, to some interesting hydrothermal activity that can be seen from the surface.
An early start is always needed to get your head in the game and across the ridge to drop into one of these canyons.
Most of them are quite good and although they all mimic one another,
Erebus has its unique charm.
You can find some decently narrow passages,
and some nice drops along the way.
The larger drops are lower angle but still provide a lot of fun.
Make sure you inspect EACH anchor you put your life on and take responsibility to change out any anchors that do not seem to be right.
You want to make sure you have a shuttle car at
the bottom and make sure you bring your shuttle key with you.
It took us around 8 hours to complete this canyon but expect longer times if your group is large or you are building anchors.
